Your Stars Competition a Hit during National School Sports Week
On 1st of July 2010 Year 9 students from Handsworth Grange Community Sports College, King Ecgbert School, Birley Community College, City School and Meadowhead School all took part in Britain’s biggest school sporting event; Llyods TSB National School Sports Week. The event was hosted at Concord Sports Centre where Olympic Silver medalist Gail Emms came and supported the day by getting involved with the events and meeting the students.
Students had the opportunity to take part in two competitions from; swimming, indoor rowing, boccia, inclusive zone basketball, skills challenge, extreme golf and ultimate Frisbee. On the day there was running a mainstream competition and SEN competition which made the day accessible to all. The day was supported by 40 young leaders from HandsworthGrangeCommunitySportsCollege, BirleyCommunity College, CitySchool, KingEcgbertSchool and SheffieldHallamUniversity. Forge SSP would like to thank Sheffield City Council Swimming team, Activity Sheffield the Eddie Bryant for coming down and delivering activities on the day.
The day was also an opportunity for Forge to showcase the fantastic work happening within the Partnership to local councilors, the Minister of Education Tim Loughton and the Youth Sport Trust, including the chair of Youth Sport Trust Baroness Sue Campbell.
The competition was a culmination of the Your Sport, Your Activity and Your Leader programmes being delivered within the secondary schools. Each programme offers alternative opportunities for students to progress in sport whether it’s trying an alternative activity or improving their leadership skills.
Gail Emms was very impressed with the day and gave a massive thumbs up, saying
“A lot of hard work has gone into organising this event and there is lots of passion about sport around and everyone has thrown themselves behind it. The legacy of the London 2012 Olympics is to get people involved in sport and I haven’t just seen people competing, I have seen people teaching, people coaching and people organizing. Young people listen to young people – I remember that being the case when I was at school – and it is great to see so many people involved.”
The day was a massive success, with everyone involved having an enjoyable day. Thank you to everyone involved with 120 competitors, 40 leaders and 20 members of staff supporting the day. Everyone that took part in the day received a National School Sports Week T-shirt provided by Lloyds TSB.
