The "Forge Talent Academy" was created and delivered for the first time in 2009. Almost 700 pupils from the south east area of Forge School Sport Partnership (Forge SSP) were tested in schools, with 30 of the most talented pupils being selected to attend a weekly academy session during the summer term. Due to the success of last year’s programme it was decided that the academy was to be opened up partnership wide encompassing all 27 primary schools from the partnership.
Between Christmas and Easter three central assessments were held. Primary Link Teachers from across the partnership identified talented Y6 pupils from their individual schools. These pupils were then invited to attend the central assessment evenings where they were tested on different generic elements of sport including agility, speed, flexibility and co-ordination, along with pupils’ ability to be creative, innovative, solve problems, work as part of a team and remain focussed on tasks. From these tests the top 30 pupils from the south east and the top 30 from the south west were selected to attend the ‘Talent Academy’.
The academy commenced after the Easter Break and is currently running one evening per week for the entire summer term. Sessions take place every Wednesday evening at Handsworth Grange Community Sports College between 5pm and 6pm (for south east pupils) and every Tuesday evening at King Ecgbert School between 5pm and 6pm (for south west pupils).
The academy aims to provide talented pupils with an opportunity to experience quality sports coaching sessions in a wide variety of sports providing a link with local clubs for pupils to progress into a club setting if they excel in a particular sport that they may not have experienced before.
At the end of every weekly session, pupils sit down and complete a pupil diary to reflect on the positive and negative aspects of the sessions and also identify whether they would be interested in participating in the sport outside of school. This enables pupils to be effectively directed towards local clubs that they may wish to join.
